Peas combat hypertension and kidney diseases
“That is a great improvement,” said Aluko, and added that there were no adverse side effects evident from the protein pea.
On the basis of the promising results, the researchers plan prove the extract of protein in human beings with mild hypertension in the next year in the center of Richardson Functional Foods , at the University of Manitoba, in collaboration with the co-researcher Dr. Peter Jones.
Scientists do not know exactly how the extract of pea, but it seems to increase the production of cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1), a protein that increases the kidney function, say the researchers.
Aluko said that eat yellow peas in its natural state do not produce the same potential benefits for health as the extract purified protein.
Since the potentially beneficial protein exists in a state inactive in the peas natural and should be activated by treatment with special enzymes.
However, the extract of pea has a great social advantage on the peas fresh: “It is not going to give gas,” says Aluko that is because the purified proteins do not contain the complex sugars found in the plant beans fresh and known trigger flatulence. Read the rest of this entry »
